#Chapter1 (continued)

For many years people didn’t understand ‘how’ cannabis actually provided medical relief until the discovery of the “Endocannabinoid System” which “is a group of neuromodulatory lipids and their receptors in the brain that are involved in a variety of physiological processes including appetite, pain-sensation, mood, and memory; it mediates the psychoactive effects of cannabis and, broadly speaking, includes:

• The endogenous arachidonate-based lipids, anandamide (N-arachidonoylethanolamide, AEA) and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG); these are known as "endocannabinoids" and are physiological ligands for the cannabinoid receptors. Endocannabinoids are all eicosanoids.[1]

• The enzymes that synthesize and degrade the endocannabinoids, such as fatty acid amide hydrolase or monoacylglycerol lipase.
• The cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2, two G protein-coupled receptors that are located in the central and peripheral nervous systems.
There are literally thousands of studies on the beneficial effects of cannabinoids and human health, however for the most part these studies never saw the light of day.

In fact, the government actively sponsored studies to debunk the medical efficacy of cannabis and outline the possible ‘dangers’ in order to promote their tyrannous policy. Despite their efforts, people continued to use cannabis for medical reasons and in 1997 California managed to pass the first ‘Medical Marijuana Law’ in the United States.

During this time our understanding of the medical efficacy of cannabis has greatly improved and every day new treatments are discovered.
