July 4, 2013 - Oglala Lakota Nation
Mitakuyepi Anpetu kin le Lila cante wosice. Relatives, we are with a heavy heart today as our Traditional Chief Oliver Red Cloud has begun his journey on the spirit road; He was Itancan of the Great Sioux Nation and the Black Hills Sioux Nation Treaty Council. Chief Oliver's direct ancestor Mahpiya Luta (Red Cloud) led the RedCloud wars of 1866-1868 against the United States winning the Tetonwan Oyate (Lakota) world renown and forcing the USA to offer a peace treaty in which all of the Black Hills (& surrounding areas) were reserved to the Great Sioux Nation (by the Lakota; the treaty isn't a grant of rights to us, but a grant of rights from us) via International law. It is because of Chief Oliver Red Cloud, other Headmen, Itancan, Naca & the women that appoint them, among other posts deriving from inherent sovereignty that our spiritual sovereignty still lives. It is because of people like Chief Oliver Red Cloud that we have a language, landbase, way of life, a history, a future, and a rightful place among the nations of the world; he has left a legacy to fulfill. We await instructions & details from the family of Chief Red Cloud, Floyd Hand and Alex White Plume. We ask that you burn sage and cedar and offer prayer in any way you know how to remember Chief Red Cloud. We will join our relatives in singing Red Clouds song. Help your traditional leaders grow wherever you are; the Lakota are at a great loss today.
