Turtle Island
18" x 24"
Mixed Media on Canvas
Many Aboriginal groups call this land we live on Turtle Island. It comes from the legend of Skywoman who fell to earth, which was all water. She gathered soil from the ocean floor and shaped it on the back of a turtle and created our home. The turtle is called "Ha Nu Nah" in Seneca.
Our land is a living thing, and it's also the only land we have. We sacrifice parts of it, kill it, for our comforts and wants, and just a little bit for our needs as well.
But mostly it's waste and greed.
We all know it and we all wish it were different. We feel powerless in our own world, relying on people who control the corporations and the politicians we vote in to power to make sure it all turns out okay.
But no one is thinking about their family yet to be born.
There are generations to come who we are cheating today.
We are cheating ourselves!
When we can't swim in the waters, when we can't eat the fish from the rivers or the animals from our lands because they have been poisoned, we have cheated ourselves.
We need to stop closing our eyes and shutting our ears. Of course we do it because we don't want to hear about how bad it is. We don't want to see. It hurts.
But we can do something about it. The more people speak, the better the world will get. The more we operate from happiness and less from fear and greed, the better the world will get. The more we realize our true power and act, the better the world will get.
Which is a good thing!
We only have one world, after all.
It's so beautiful, so fragile, and so giving.
Please let us protect it. Please let us walk gently and take less. Please let us use our minds and spirits to realize our hunger is only sadness, and that it will only change when we serve.
Please let us tolerate the shortsighted destruction of our lands, our waters, our skies and our souls no longer.
We are mighty when we are together. And we are together on this Turtle Island, and there is no other.
